Live cattle futures are experiencing upward momentum on Friday, with contracts rising by up to 30 cents, although the June contract is down by 50 cents. Cash trade commenced early this week, starting at $250-252 and reaching $256-257 by Wednesday. Feeder cattle futures are also showing strength, gaining between 77 cents and $1. The CME Feeder Cattle Index has increased by $2.67 to $372.47 as of April 29.
The current market dynamics are influenced by a mix of cash trade activity and ongoing concerns about new world screwworm cases in Mexico, which could impact cattle health and supply. Additionally, wholesale boxed beef prices are trending lower, with the Choice and Select boxes down to $389.29 and $386.52, respectively. USDA data indicates a weekly slaughter total of 434,000 head, which is an increase from last week but still below last year’s figures.
Market participants should monitor these developments closely, as fluctuations in cattle futures and boxed beef prices could signal shifts in supply chain dynamics and pricing strategies in the meat sector.
